BAY RIDGE – Who’s your favorite superhero? Adelphians had the chance to answer that question visually on Thursday, October 8th, 2020 as the entire school came together to show school spirit on Hero Day! Students, faculty and staff came to Adelphi Academy of Brooklyn dressed as their favorite superheroes, both fictional and real, for the first of Adelphi’s monthly Spirit Day events.

Each student read the official Superhero Rules — 1) Be extraordinary, 2) Be brave, 3) Only use your powers for good, 4) Fight crime, 5) Always do your best and 6) Dream big — then posed in front of a giant superhero backdrop set up inside the Academy’s Panther Cafe. All of Adelphi’s heroes received colorful stickers and power bracelets on this very special day!

Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and Captain America were among the most popular characters portrayed by students and teachers, but there were also costumes paying tribute to real heroes like police officers, firefighters and members of the military.

The day was inspired by the strength and resilience shown by all Adelphians as they returned to in-person learning for the Academy’s historic 158th academic year in September following a difficult period of uncertainty brought on by the global pandemic. Students, faculty and staff showed great courage as they adhered to vital safety measures that were implemented to keep the school community safe and healthy throughout the year.

“Hero Day served as the perfect event to kick off Adelphi Academy of Brooklyn’s Annual Spirit Day program,” Head of School Ms. Iphigenia Romanos said. “To start the year on such a positive note and echo such an important, valuable life lesson like tapping into one’s own heroic qualities — from being polite and respectful to assisting others in need at all times — is a great symbol of the sense of community and cooperation that helps make an Adelphi education truly an education of the total child.”

As the oldest private, independent, continuing, coeducational, college-preparatory day school in the borough and one of the oldest in the nation, Adelphi Academy of Brooklyn, “the little school of big dreams” has been “effectively preparing  young people for college, career, and life, one day at a time” for over 150 years.  Founded in 1863 and located in the historic Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn, Adelphi enrolls students from three years of age through twelfth grade.  A strong emphasis is placed on small class size, individualized attention, self-expression, critical thinking and challenging hands-on learning through Adelphi’s founding philosophy and dedication to the education of the “total child.” Adelphi students excel within a small, intimate, safe, caring, nurturing, and secure environment through Adelphi’s core values and founding principles of pride, tradition, spirit, and excellence. The student-teacher ratio is 8 to 1 and Adelphi is a New York State Regents Exempt Program with a 100% college application, acceptance and attendance rate. A founding member of the Coalition of Essential Schools, Adelphi receives its charter from the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York and has been a member of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools since 1928. Ms. Iphigenia Romanos serves as Head of School.
