Oracle Spring 2021

By: The Oracle Staff Who needs a break? Not these dedicated Adelphians! Students of all ages enjoyed various hands-on learning activities and games during Adelphi Acad- emy of Brooklyn’s Spring Break SHTEAM Camp. Campers created their very own tie-dyed T-shirts, enjoyed karaoke, conducted sci- ence experiments and so much more! Upper Schoolers served as counselors and assisted with each activity, earning service hours while creating lasting bonds with younger students. “I enjoyed seeing the kids enjoy all the activities and become so en- thusiastic about everything they were doing!” counselor Isabella said. “I loved how we all worked together to make sure these kids had such a fun time during this camp experi- ence!” On the first day of camp, the excited Adelphians created elephant toothpaste. They were thrilled to see the foam-like substance rise and make a volcanic reaction. Next, they created tie-dyed T-shirts inside Adelphi’s Art Studio. The campers chose all different colors and designs to create their shirts. Counselors went around pouring the colors all over the shirts, then set them off to the side to dry. Then it was time for some exercise, so the students per- formed some soccer drills. On the second day of camp, the young artists created their very own rain stick — a percussion instrument that is generally used to produce the sound effects of rain or, when shaken, a sound similar to the mara- cas. Students utilized toilet paper rolls, paper and rice to imitate the sound of a rain stick. Then it was time for another sci- ence experiment, as campers mixed chemicals to create glow-in-the-dark water. On the final day of camp, the students enjoyed karaoke to start the day. After that, older students built robots, while the younger ones cre- ated bunnies using marshmallows and glue. Then, they made their very own maracas out of cardboard and rice. Lastly, counselors assisted the happy campers as they created sand art masterpieces. —Maksim Li, Isabella Matone and Isaac Nasimov contributed to this report V O L U M E L X X I , I S S U E 3 THE ADELPHI ORACLE INSIDE THI S I SSUE : Founded 1863 8515 Ridge Boulevard Bay Ridge Brooklyn, New York 11209-4307 We’re on the Web! adelphi.org Follow Us @adelphiacademy Adelphi Academy of Brooklyn School News 2-14 Interview with the Publisher 7 Interview with a New Adelphian 8 Faculty Reflection 9 Of the Months 12-13 Fashion 14-15 Sports 16 Entertainment 17-18 Science 19 Talkin’ Tech 20 Gamer’s Guide 20 Food 21 Beauty 22 Art 22 Comics 23 Puzzles 24 S P R I N G 2 0 2 1 Adelphi Academy Guidance Counselor Ms. Wynne helps Lower Schooler David create a tie-dyed T-shirt during the Spring Break SHTEAM Camp!
