Oracle Spring 2020

By: Ilona Makovetskaya, Grade 11 & Susan Benjamin, Grade 11 Are you up to the challenge? To complement Adelphi Academy’s distance learning program, Student Advi- sory Board members recently came up with a way to keep all of the students con- nected and working together on a weekly basis: The Weekly Homeroom Challenge! Student Advisory Board members felt a responsibility to create competitive and challenging tasks each week for Adel- phians to stay involved as a school com- munity. Together they brainstormed a list of challenges and shared the list with each other. When coming up with the chal- lenges, board members wanted to make sure that the students wouldn't get the an- swer right away, or be able to look up the answers online. When setting the rules for the chal- lenge, the student leaders worked together with the faculty. To make it competitive and interesting, they came up with a points system, complete with a surprise for the winners when the Levermore Term ends. The points system is as follows: first place is awarded 100 points, second place is awarded 50 points and third place is awarded 25 points. This was set up as a homeroom challenge rather than a House challenge so that students could work on it together each week during their morning group sessions. Every Tuesday at 12:50 p.m., the chal- lenges are presented to everyone. The stu- dents have exactly two days to respond to their homeroom teachers with the correct answers. Those who answer correctly in the fastest times are named the first-, second- and third-place winners every Friday during Adelphi’s “Friendly Friday” assemblies.
